Joe, Thanks for your e-mail and the pic. Your mushroom looks like Ganoderma lucidum or Ganoderma tsugae to me:

. . . The principal difference between these species is that the former grows on hardwoods and the latter grows on conifers. I see both maple leaves and white pine needles in your photo--but the stump looks "coniferish" to me (mostly based on the way that one little branch sticks out), so G. tsugae is my guess.

I doubt you would want to eat it after picking it and seeing that you'd need mastodon teeth to chew it.
