Walking around China Town in NYC, I came upon this magnificent painted garage door. The colors screamed out to me and I was compelled to record this image. Of course, as soon as I was ready to take my shot, a car parked right in from of the garage. I waited patiently while the driver let some folks out of the car to go into a nearby church, and was rewarded for my patience with this wonderful image.
The graffiti artists title for this image, “Know Your Rights!”, was certainly appropriate for my day – I’d been repeatedly yelled at and chased away by locals who didn’t like the idea of me taking pictures in their neighborhoods. Lot’s of apologies and missed opportunities happened that day. The language barrier didn’t help either – even after asking permission and getting what I thought were positive nods, I was still chased away by a few folks.
The day was very overcast, and unfortunately, Auto White Balance didn’t do the trick. I’m glad I shot in RAW that day since I was able to adjust the white balance to get exactly the right tone throughout the image.
Photoshop’s clone tool helped remove a garbage bag from the lower right corner of the image that detracted from the overall feel of the image.
Some cropping and minor straightening in Photoshop CS2 with some boost in saturation and a little sharpening helped make this image what it is.
Printed with my Epson Stylus Pro 4000 on Epson Velvet Fine Art Paper, this image looks a bit more like a photorealistic painting than a photograph, but that’s one of the reasons I like it so much.
